Being a British Citizen
At Whitegate School social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and our Christian values are strengthened as our curriculum enables the children to understand the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of the laws, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. As the Christian faith has been the driving force in our education and legal system for centuries and have made their mark on our British history, these values are intrinsically bound together. More information on how British Values link with our school values can be found below and in the attached document.
Throughout school, you will see a variety of teaching and learning opportunities which enable our children to understand:
- Democracy
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” – Galatians 3:28
This can be seen in action through our School Council; ensuring all pupils are listened to, class debates and opportunities for pupil voice.
- The rule of law
"Let everyone ne subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." (Romans 13:1)
This is demonstrated by classes creating 'class charters’; having a clear Relationships Policy which is known and understood; and the use of the Picture News resource.
- Individual liberty
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” – Galatians 5:13
Pupils are given many opportunities to practice their individual liberty for good. Opportunities to grow in this area are though residential visits, clubs and our unselfish act.
- Mutual respect
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:34-35
At Whitegate School there are 'no outsiders'. Everyone is welcomed and everyone's opinion is valued. We practice restorative practice and develop the theme of respect through Collective Worship, are annual Anti-Bullying week and the Year 6 and Acorn buddy system.
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” – Matthew 22:37-39
Our RE scheme of work provides pupils with a deep understanding and awareness of the faith and traditions of religious communities. This is supported by our annual Interfaith week, visits and guests from different religions and worldviews and our PHSE curriculum which includes No Outsiders.
Through our school values and our 'No Outsiders' work, our children have an understanding of equality and how others should be treated. Our school provides a safe place for pupils to discuss, challenge and form their own opinions and values. This empowers them to tackle prejudice, improve relationships and promote their emotional well-being.
