Mike Amesbury MP visit

We were delighted to welcome Mike Amesbury to our school today and to have the opportunity to showcase the work and the wealth of experiences that the children engage in.

At Whitegate CofE Primary, we encourage our school community to be ‘courageous advocates’: to develop a greater awareness of the challenges others face in life and the role that we can play to make a difference. As such, as a result of their topic, ‘Delving into Freedom’, the children in Willow became very passionate about the issue of modern day slavery and asked if they could contact their local MP, as they were horrified to discover that slavery still exists today.  We were delighted to welcome Mike Amesbury to our school, to talk about this in detail and to ask for him to raise it in parliament.

There was also an opportunity to discuss the issue of school funding, the reality of budget cuts and how this affects the children directly, as well as finding out about Mike’s bill on making school uniform affordable.  We were able to share, what we are doing at Whitegate School to help parents with this.
