SEND update – July 2019
In May this year, all teaching staff received some training on ‘What is dyslexia?’ the impact it can have on learning and how to create a dyslexia friendly classroom environment. It highlighted lots of already good practice in school and gave some further strategies for support we can use with all our children.
In January, we were fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Darnhall Exhibition Foundation. This was to purchase a computer programme ‘Click 7,’ recommended by an outside professional. The package supports children who may have difficulty with fine motor control and handwriting or those who find spelling and/or reading a challenge. Training was delivered to all teaching staff and the programme has been used to support children in various classes. Training for teaching assistants has also begun so all staff can hit the ground running in September, with this new piece of supportive technology.
I regularly attend training cluster meetings run by Cheshire West and Chester, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team (CWAC SEND team). Recent updates have included changes to funding arrangements for pre-school children moving into reception and the referral pathways for the Speech and Language Therapy Team and the Autism Team. There will be changes made to how funding is allocated from September 2019 which will include documents for school, to help identify the level of need and further training for Special Education Needs and Disabilities Coordinators (SENDCos).
We have dates in the diary already for Termly Learning Goal (TLG) meetings in the next academic year (2019-2020). These are spread across the year to ensure regular and consistent times for discussion and collaboration, should your child have a TLG. The dates are as follows:
21st and 22nd November
26th and 27th November
4th and 5th June
These are obviously subject to change, however, if your child does have a TLG you will be sent an appointment in advance, nearer the time.
